CAPITALIST DEMOCRACY

Democracy is a system of government base on the    approval of the people been governed. It is a system of government where the people    elect their leaders by themselves. In other words, it is the government of the people by the people and for the people. Capitalism is an economic system that allows private ownership of Means production. It is an economic system which gave rights to private individuals’ ownership of Means of production. Capitalist democracy is there for a system of government in which power emanates from the supports of the majority of the people.  Capitalist democracy is also seen as a political economic and social system that is based on  a blend of Democratic and capitalist principles.

Characteristics of capitalist democracy.

a. Free market:  in capitalist democracy, the capitalist decide how much to sell their products to maximize profit. Sometimes, the forces of demand and supply determine the price in the market.  Government does not intervene in settings prices.

b. Private ownership: in capitalist democracy individuals have the right to acquire    properties based on the abilities.

c. Freedom of choice:  in a capitalist democracy, the producer has your rights  to decide what to produce  and  at the same time the consumer has the right to choose what  to consume.

d. Competition:  is the existence of competitions among the   capitalist which in turn lead to rapid innovation and development.

e. Minimal Government Control:  in this democracy, there is minimal and no government controls on business activities
f.  Democratic governance:  In capitalism democracy people choose who will govern them.  This is done by conducting   periodic elections where political parties compete for the votes of the people
g.  Rule of   law:  in this system the Lord is supreme no one is above the law everyone is treated equally before the law irrespective of status.

How political parties compete for power

A political party is an organized group of people who share similar  political views for the purpose of taking part in election in order  to form government. Political parties compete for power through the following:

a. Manifesto: this is a written document that explain the aims or objectives of a group of people especially political party. It contain what they will do if they win election. Politicians in various political parties use manifesto to convince the citizens to join or vote for their party. 

b. Logo: this is the identification symbol for advertising a particular party. Logo attracts the interest or attention of the citizens to a particular party. It helps in competing for power among political parties.  In Nigeria, each political party has its own logo. For instance PDP’s logo is Umbrella,

 










APC, Broom

APGA, a Cock etc.

c. Slogan: this is a word or phrase used in expressing the objective of the party. It must be a positive one that will bring positive change towards the development of a country. It is used to win the hearts of the citizens towards a particular country. It also used to compete for power among political parties. For instance, the slogan of APC is “Change”, PDP, “Power to the People” etc.

d. Rallies: this is a large public gathering that is held outdoors to support political ideas, protest etc. It is used to arouse  citizens’ interest to a political party. It is also a powerful instrument used to win the heart of the citizens and to convince voters (electorate) on party programme.

e. Campaign: this is a series of planned political activities that is  designed to achieve a particular political  result.  The politicians in various parties use campaign to compete with the opposition  parties. Money is easily spends in order to win the hearts of the citizens.

Importance of Employment in Alleviating Poverty

Employment is an activity in which one engages in or is employed which allows one to afford the basic things of life examples are shelter, good health services, education, etc. It can also be defined as an occupation by which a person earns a living.
people can either be employed by the government, private individuals or be self-employed. Employment is important in alleviating poverty as this determines the state of the economy of a nation and its tendency to develop among the comity of nations.
The importance of employment in alleviating the poverty level of a country are as follows;

a. Provide means of savings:  through income generators from employment it is possible to sell some amounts for future purposes.

b. Provide capital for investments: a person that is game play employees will find it easy to save some money to set up a small business that will generate more income to the family.

c. Provide money for feeding:  income receipts from employment can be used to buy goods that increase the standard of living of the family in the Society.

d. Provide income for the family:  employment helps the breadwinner  of the family to get sufficient income to meet the basic necessities of life.

e. Provide more funds for government to fight poverty through money generated from income  tax  paid  by workers,  government will have more revenue to fight poverty.

f. Increase the level of demands lead into economic growth: employment generally increases to level of demands for good s in an economy which results to the expansion of the industries.

g. It reduces Problem in the family which often triggers poverty:  joblessness on the part of the parents sometimes causes broken homes   making the children poor in their adulthood. The ability of parents to secure gainful employment forestalls these problems thereby making the level of poverty to be reduced in future.

h. Reduce the level of crime in society: there is a saying that an idle mind is a Devils workshop if one is employed he has no time to engage in some criminal acts.

Empowerment of youth with skills acquisition projects: employment assist individuals to earn a meaningfully living as well as enables them to empower others.
